It has been revealed that many women over the age of 55 in Australia are suffering from homelessness due to lack of work or any means of livelihood.
Among the groups experiencing homelessness in Australia, women over the age of 55 are said to be at the forefront.
Such women often have less savings or pensions than men and are often traumatized by events such as job loss and divorce.
Reports from Mission Australia, which provides services to homeless Australians, show an 83 per cent increase in women over 55 seeking support with housing and everyday essentials.
Mission Australia has therefore called for the government to invest more in social housing and affordable housing for older women to live with dignity in their own homes and in society.
According to the 2021 census, it has been revealed that 19,378 people aged 55 and above are suffering from homelessness.
