The state government of Victoria has decided to close some parts of the Arapiles, which is Australia’s most popular and world-famous mountain climbing destination.
Under the proposed changes in the draft management plan related to cultural heritage, it is stated that restrictions will be imposed on a large number of roads around the mountain.
Located in the western part of Victoria, this mountainous area is considered to be one of the largest sites of art and ancient plants with a history of more than 3000 years.
The state government said the new management plan gave rights to the traditional owners represented by the Land Council.
80 climbing areas are open to climbers under this management plan and declaration Several climbing areas, including the Crag, Tiger Wall and Castle Crag, will remain closed in 2020.
The new areas permanently banned include The Pharos, Yesterday Gully, Mitre Rock and Tiptoe Ridge.
Many mountaineers have condemned the move and public consultation on the new draft management plan will remain open until December 2.
