Period between Christmas and New Years the ‘deadliest for drowning’ in Australia

Royal Lifesaving Society AUST Chief Executive Justin Scarr says the period between Christmas and New Year is the “deadliest for drowning” right across the country.

“Certainly, for the last number of years,” he told Sky News Australia.

Mr Scarr’s comments come after two men drowned at beaches in New South Wales on Christmas day.

“We had 25 drowning deaths between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day last year,” he said.

“Already we’ve seen a real tragic start to the traditional holiday period.”
