Police shoot pet dog after it bites officer, suspect during arrest

Police have shot dead a dog that attacked an officer and a male suspect during an arrest in Perth’s east

Officers were at a home in Stratton about 9:30am on Tuesday where they took a man aged in his 30s into custody.

While this was happening, police say a dog, owned by another person, attacked the arrested man and a female officer.

A male police officer fatally shot the dog “to prevent further injury”.

The arrested man sustained an injury to one of his legs and the policewoman has injuries to her legs and one of her hands.

Both have been taken to Midland Hospital and police are investigating the incident.

A sign warning visitors to “Beware of Dog” was visible on the front door of the house in Stratton when the ABC attended the scene this afternoon.

A nearby resident, who did not want to be identified, described the dog as a “gentle giant”.

“He doesn’t attack people … just wants cuddles,” the man said.

“Kids used to play with him, no dramas.

He said the dog had been trained to protect his family.

“It’s not the dog’s fault, the dog’s just doing his job,” he said.

“Unfortunately the dog got the raw end of the stick.”
