Popular sunscreen products recalled, over sun protection concerns

Bondi Sands has recalled two sunscreen products due to reports the ingredients were “splitting into layers” and may not offer the required level of UV protection.

The two products: Bondi Sands Mineral Zinc Sunscreen SPF50+ Face Lotion 60mL and Bondi Sands Mineral Zinc Sunscreen SPF50+ Body Lotion 120mL, are labelled with an expiration date of November 2025.

The Bondi Sands products are available at all major supermarkets, including Coles and Woolworths.

It is reported the medicinal ingredients that prevent sunburn “are not properly mixed” and are therefore ineffective.

Customers who have purchased the Bondi Sands Mineral Zinc Sunscreen SPF50+ from the mentioned batches are instructed not to use them.

The ingredients in sunscreen help to protect skin from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is an indicator as to how well the sunscreen provides protection compared to unprotected skin.

SPF50+, for example, is estimated to filter 98 per cent of UVB radiation, with 1/50th (2 per cent) reaching the skin.

It is recommended to apply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

In 2022, Cancer Australia recorded 17,756 cases of melanoma diagnoses, with over 1,280 deaths.

It is estimated two thirds of Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before the age of 70, according to the Cancer Council.

Those who have purchased the products may return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
