Qantas CEO Alan Joyce argues that a strong bottom line will result in better service.
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has defended the airline’s bumper $1.7 billion post-tax profit amid claims the airline is not delivering an adequate level of customer service.
Appearing on Today this morning, Joyce said Qantas’ strong financial position was actually a good thing as it allowed the airline to offer more bonuses for staff and more customer-facing roles.
Joyce admitted Qantas “had problems starting up” after the COVID-19 pandemic but maintained that the airline’s performance was at or better than pre-pandemic settings.
“At the start of this year, like a lot of airlines around the world, we had problems starting up. We apologised to customers for that,” Joyce told Karl and Sarah.
“But now we’ve got the operation back and in some cases better than it was before COVID. We still work to do in some areas.
“But our on-time performance now is beating Virgin for the last 11 of 12 months. That is the best we have ever done.”
