Driving re-education for older drivers could greatly improve safety on Australia’s roads, new research has revealed.
Research has revealed that older drivers should volunteer to test their skills to improve safety on Australia’s roads.
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Institute of Neuroscience have also launched a new website aimed at helping drivers aged 50 and over to drive safely on the road.
Professor Caryn Anstey of the University of New South Wales said driving lessons for the elderly were vital as the population grew.
The professor stated that the second biggest cause of injuries to the elderly is car accidents or falls, and because of this, she has been dealing with the problem of elderly drivers for more than 20 years.
There are many seniors who have obtained driving licenses in an era of different cars, different roads and different road rules, and studies have shown that older people tend not to be updated with the main traffic rules.
