One of South Australia’s oldest number plates, first issued in 1906, has shattered auction records, selling for an astounding $2.3 million.
The coveted single-digit plate, bearing the number eight, has become the most expensive one ever sold in the state.
The auction saw the price skyrocket by $1 million in the final hour.
The new owner will officially receive the plates next week, while the state will receive a funding boost that can go towards infrastructure upgrades.
“They’re a great investment for the purchaser and it’s great for us because we can take that money, fix potholes, resurface roads,” Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said.
