Senate suggests Qantas interests influenced Qatar Airways flight denial

A Senate Committee has suggested the Albanese government denied Qatar Airways additional flights to Australia to protect the interests of Qantas.

The committee recommended the government immediately review the decision to deny Qatar 28 additional weekly flights into the country.

It concluded the government rejected Qatar Airways’ request to protect Qantas’ market share and keep the cost of airfares high.

The report suggested the shift in the government’s position on Qatar Airways’ request aligned with Qantas’ support for the Voice referendum.

The committee also wanted consumer protection measures that will cover travellers subjected to flight delays and cancellations.
