Shark expert explains the rise in attacks off South Australia coast

Shark expert Andrew Fox warns that the increase in attacks in 2023 could be due to changing environmental factors.

It comes as the last attack in Innes National Park near Marion Bay on Thursday is the fifth shark attack in South Australia this year.

“In the last year we have had five attacks with three fatal attacks which is significantly more than just a couple over the last eight previous years,” Mr Fox told Sky News Australia.

“These anomalies could be due to changes in their prey sources that they’re migrating through the area.

“There’s been four years of El Nino followed by La Nina, so those sort of environmental conditions can change where food is distributed and that changes the shark’s behaviour.”
