Singapore has offered assistance to upgrade Sri Lanka’s immigration system, according to the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore.
High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Singapore, Senarath Dissanayake, recently met officials from Singapore’s Immigration Checkpoint Authority (ICA) at the High Commission.
The ICA delegation, visiting Sri Lanka from 26 to 31 May aims to explore collaboration opportunities to enhance Sri Lanka’s immigration system using advanced technology and achieving standards similar to those of Singapore. This visit follows a request from Sri Lanka’s Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, to Singapore’s Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, K Shanmugam.
During the meeting, the High Commissioner highlighted the challenges Sri Lanka faces in border control. He emphasised that the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration is eager to welcome the delegation, as their expertise would significantly contribute to modernising and improving the country’s immigration processes.
Deputy Director of ICA, Phua Chiew, who leads the ICA team, briefed the High Commissioner on ICA’s transformation journey and their planned engagements with Sri Lankan authorities. He explained that this visit is a preliminary step to understand Sri Lanka’s border control systems and measures. He also conveyed ICA’s readiness to assist Sri Lanka in improving their border management capabilities.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthen cooperation between the two countries on border control and immigration matters. Prior to this, an introductory meeting between High Commissioner Senarath Dissanayake and ICA Commissioner Marvin Sim was held to discuss potential collaboration between the two immigration authorities.
Minister and Head of Chancery Ahamed Razee and Minister Counsellor Naduni Hasintha also attended the meeting.
