Sri Lanka acquires sniffer dogs from Netherlands for Rs. 58 Mn

Thirty-five dogs brought from the Netherlands were handed over to the police kennel division on Friday (5th) to enhance raid efficiency and assist in identifying criminals and explosives during drug raids across the island, in conjunction with the ‘Yukthiya’ special operation, police said.

The group, which includes 13 Belgian Malinois, 12 German Shepherds, and 10 English Spaniels, was acquired from a private livestock farm in the Netherlands at a cost of Rs.58 million, media reported.

The dogs were received by Police Media Spokesman and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the Crimes Division, Nihal Talduwa, at the Katunayake Airport Animal Quarantine Institute.

After arrival, the dogs were transported from the Katunayake Airport Air Cargo Terminal to the Airport Animal Quarantine Institute, where veterinary officers conducted inspections. Subsequently, they were handed over to trainers and will be taken to the police kennel division after a three-month quarantine period.
