The Department of Meteorology issued a weather advisory on Sunday (19), urging caution for naval and fishing communities venturing into the South-eastern Arabian Sea and the southwestern Bay of Bengal. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and very rough seas are expected in these areas until further notice.
The Met Department advises all communities to stay informed of future forecasts.
The weather advisory also predicts significant rainfall across Sri Lanka, with very heavy showers exceeding 150 millimeters possible in some areas of the Western and North-Western provinces.
This has prompted the Governor of the North Western Province to declare a school closure in the Puttlam district tomorrow due to the anticipated bad weather.
The Met Department attributes these conditions to pre-monsoon activity over Sri Lanka and surrounding sea areas. They warn of persistent showers and strong winds.
Heavy showers exceeding 100 millimeters are forecast for several areas, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, and Mannar districts. The Department of Irrigation reports significant water level rise in four main reservoirs – Udawalawa, Angamuwa, Rajanganaya, and Polgolla – due to the expected heavy rainfall.
The landslide warnings issued earlier for seven districts – Badulla, Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, and Ratnapura – remain in effect. Residents in these areas are advised to stay vigilant and follow official instructions.
