Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Admiral (Retired) Ravi Wijegunaratne, donated ten additional eye corneas to Brigadier (Dr.) Waquar, Director of the Pakistan Military Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi.
These corneas, donated by deceased individuals in Sri Lanka, aim to restore the eyesight of those in need. This donation marks the 26,215th eye cornea gifted by Sri Lankans to the people of Pakistan.
These corneas will be transplanted on gallant Pakistan Army personnel who lost their eye sight due to terrorist activities, specially due to Improvised Explosive Devices ( IED) explosions on priority basis and others to retired Pakistan Military personnel and also to family members.
High Commissioner Admiral Ravi said that he is extremely happy and proud that Sri Lanka people could help Pakistan people and specially Pakistan Military.
He said “ Pakistan gave us unconditional support both in Military hardware and training to fight against LTTE terrorists in Sri Lanka. Pakistan support in critical times of our recent history help us to eadiated terrorist menace in Sri Lanka.
High Commissioner was accompanied by Brigadier Kaminda Silva, the Defence Adviser of Sri Lanka High Commission in Islamabad and later they witnessed Pakistan Military Eye Specialist transplanting eye corneas to patients at state-of- the- art Operation theaters at Military Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi.
The coordination and funding for transferring these ten eye corneas by air was done by Mr Idris Admani, the President Sri Lanka- Pakistan Friendship Society with liaison Eye Donation Society of Sri Lanka.
