Sri Lankan prisons are implementing measures to address both scorching temperatures and overcrowding.
Prison Spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake explained that outdoor activities for inmates, including maintenance and cleaning work, have been reduced due to the intense heat.
This comes amidst a surge in the prison population.
Dissanayake revealed that over 30,800 individuals are currently incarcerated, significantly exceeding the system’s capacity of roughly 10,000 inmates.
