Sri Lanka to Decide on Vehicle Import Ban by August

The final decision regarding lifting the ban on vehicle imports will be made by the second week of August, said Dr. Ranjith Siambalapitiya, the Minister of State for Finance.

The committee assigned to examine this matter convened on the 4th, and their conclusive report will be submitted to the Cabinet during the second week of August.

According to the report, vehicle imports can proceed without adversely affecting the country’s foreign exchange status, while prioritizing people’s needs.

The import order will follow a sequence: public transport vehicles, goods transport vehicles, alternative vehicles, general vehicles, and private vehicles.

In Parliament today, the Minister confirmed that the Cabinet has approved the import of 1,000 vehicles for the tourism industry. However, none of these vehicles have been imported yet.
