Sri Lanka Tourist arrivals in 2023 top 900,000

The total number of foreign nationals who have visited Sri Lanka this year has surpassed 900,000.

According to data issued by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, as of 31 August, 904,318 tourists have visited the country this year.

The total number of visitors to Sri Lanka during the entire 2022, stood at 719,978.

More than 100,000 visitors each have arrived from India and Russia in 2023 while the number of visitors from the United Kingdom and Germany has surpassed 50,000 each.

Meanwhile, more than 100,000 visitors each arrived in the country in the first four months of 2023.

In May, Sri Lanka welcomed 83,309 visitors despite being the off season.

The tourist numbers picked up once again in June with 100,388 foreign nationals arriving in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka tourism industry’s remarkable recovery from last year’s economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic was officially marked in July with the arrival of 143,039 foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, according to SLTDA data, 136,405 tourists have visited Sri Lanka thus far in August.

Among them, 30,593 are from India while 15,035 visitors are from the United Kingdom.

The Ministry of Tourism is hoping an influx of tourists later this year, since the country has stabilized to a certain extent.

Sri Lanka is also hosting the Asia Cup and several sporting events in the coming months which could attract sports fans to the country.
