Sri Lankans in Italy Face Job Risks

Sri Lankans residing in Italy are grappling with employment uncertainties as the conversion program for Sri Lankan driving licenses to Italian ones remains suspended for approximately two years.

This hiatus in the system has jeopardized job prospects for many individuals who secured employment opportunities as drivers in Italy through the license conversion process.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively engaged in renegotiating the agreement, with discussions underway between motor vehicle authorities of both nations to address the pressing issue.

Sri Lankans residing in Italy are facing a challenge due to the temporary suspension of the system of converting the Sri Lankan driving license to an Italian driving license.

They said that the program has not been functional for about 2 years.

A large number of people have received job opportunities as drivers in Italy, through the system of converting the Sri Lankan driving license to an Italian driving license.

They say that the current situation has given rise to a risk of job losses.

When inquired in this regard by News 1st, a senior official said that the agreement between the two countries to convert the Sri Lankan driving license to an Italian driving license, has expired.

The senior official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that steps have been taken to renew the agreement.

He added that motor vehicle officials of the two countries are holding discussions in this regard.
