Sri Lanka’s 2nd Female Chief Justice sworn today

Supreme Court Justice Murdu Nirupa Bidushini Fernando was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Sri Lanka in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the President’s Office this morning .

She will join history as the second woman appointed as the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka and the 48th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.

The Constituent Assembly has recently approved the name of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya for the vacant position after her retirement.

She joined the Attorney General’s Department in 1985 and was promoted to the position of Deputy Solicitor General in 1997 and Additional Solicitor General in 2014.

She joined the Attorney General’s Department as a government lawyer and has worked there for more than 30 years, and was appointed to the Supreme Court in March 2018.

Mrs. Mudu Fernando served as the Senior Additional Solicitor General in the Attorney General’s Department and is currently the most senior judge in the Supreme Court.

Judge Murdu Fernando, an alumnus of the Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa, has obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo.
