Sri Lanka’s general election voting begins

Voting for the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka has already started.

Accordingly, the Election Commission stated that polling will be conducted in 13,421 polling stations across the island until 4 pm.

The Election Commission has also requested all the voters to come to the polling station in the morning and cast their vote.

Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake stated that the polling will take place in 13,421 polling stations across the island from 7 am to 4 pm.

8,888 candidates are competing for this election and the number of eligible voters is 17,140,354.

The Election Commission informs the voters that if they have not received a voter card but are registered in the voter list, they can vote by carrying an accepted document confirming their identity such as national identity card, passport, retired identity card, driver’s license.

About 64,000 police officers have been deployed for the security duties of this year’s general election and local and foreign observers are also present to monitor the polling.

In the meantime, the executive director of PAFRAL organization, Rohana Hettiarachchi, said that steps have been taken to deploy a group of around 6,000 representatives for monitoring the elections this year.
