Sri Lanka’s Prison Population Sees Significant Rise

The Sri Lankan prison system has witnessed a recent increase in its inmate population, according to a statement released by Prison Media Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake.

As of now, approximately 32,000 individuals are incarcerated in Sri Lanka’s prisons.

In response to this rise, Dissanayake outlined efforts to manage the growing population.

He announced that convicts sentenced to one or two months for various offenses will be directed to Pallansena Prison Camp.

This move aims to ease the pressure on larger prisons and optimize resource allocation.

Furthermore, Dissanayake noted that some convicts are being sent to prison labor camps and open air prisons.
