Major supermarkets need to be “more responsive” to Australia’s struggle with the cost-of-living crisis, Agriculture & Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt says.
Mr Watt’s comments come as The Greens prepare to spearhead a select Senate inquiry into the price gouging of major supermarkets while Aussies struggle to keep up with inflation.
“I think they need to be much more responsive to the concerns of Australians about cost-of-living pressures,” Mr Watt told Sky News Australia.
“Obviously as a government we are doing everything we possibly can to take pressure off people in cost-of-living, while not adding to inflation.
“We need to see the big supermarket chains do the same thing.”
Both Woolworth’s and Coles reported over $1 billion in profit for 2023.
