Sydney and Melbourne are excluded from the eco-friendly laws

A recent study has revealed that two of Australia’s major cities, Melbourne and Sydney, are excluded from the world standard canopy rule.

Recent research by RMIT University in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich has revealed that 2.5 million buildings have been designed in eight major cities worldwide.

It is noted that only the inner suburbs of Melbourne and Sydney were used for this study.

Meanwhile, the study found that less than a quarter of Melbourne’s inner-city areas had more than 20% coverage.

It added that around a third of Sydney’s inner-city areas have coverage close to 30%.

Professor Thami Crouser, principal researcher at RMIT’s Center for Urban Research, said many areas of Melbourne and Sydney were moving towards canopy development, but the natural environment was not being prioritized when designing streets and roads.
