Sydney gym forced to close its doors due to rising costs

The cost of living crisis has forced the closure of a Sydney gym, which offered a second chance to ex-prisoners and prison-style training to members of the public.

Confit Gym, which is short for Convict Fitness, is due to shut its doors at Parramatta in Sydney’s west on Saturday.

CEO and founder Joe Kwon said the closure was “the hardest decision” he has ever had to make

He said the cost of running the gym had grown too large and it had started to weigh down the charity’s effectiveness.

Having built the fitness facility from the ground up, Mr Kwon said closing it down was ‘the hardest decision that I have ever had to make’.

The eight staff effected by the closure had ‘hit rock bottom in their lives and they have found redemption through fitness’ Mr Kwon said.

“We have decided to close down Confit gym as it was not feasible in running its operations due to the cost of living crisis in Western Sydney,” Kwon said on social media.

“The considerable amount spent on the gym was taking away from our charitable mission, the very reason why we started this in the first place.”
