Sydney Airport is expecting its busiest period in years as school holidays kick off in NSW.
It’s expected to be the busiest holiday period since international borders reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Roads are also already bustling but no significant delays have been recorded.
Residents have been warned to prepare for the chance of some travel chaos.
A Tourism and Transport Forum Australia survey found 72 per cent of Australians will take a holiday during this school break.
That’s double those who did last April.
The survey said 60 per cent of those holidayers will travel domestically with 36 per cent staying in their own state and 24 per cent leaving with the Gold Coast the most popular destination.
Only 12 per cent of those surveyed will be heading overseas.
CEO Margy Osmond warned rising living costs are continuing to impact Australians’ decision-making around travel.
“It’s fantastic to see more Australians are planning to go away these school holidays, with the majority spending their tourism dollars here at home,” she said.
“But cost pressures are still having an impact with many shortening their trip or choosing cheaper accommodation to save money.”
A total of 3.25 million travellers passed through Sydney Airport last month.
Sydneysiders are urged to keep an eye on Live Traffic for any warnings of delays on the city’s roads this afternoon as the holidays kick off.
As always, anyone heading to the airport should leave adequate time before flight departures – including two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international.
