Tasmanian salmon industry at risk of shut down

A Tasmanian coastal community is living in fear after Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek warned of a potential shut down of the state’s $1.3 billion salmon industry.

The federal government is set to review farming operations in the Macquarie Harbour over concerns by environmental groups that a unique species of fish could become extinct.

Tasmania supplies 90 per cent of Australia’s Atlantic salmon, while workers in the industry say any pause would be catastrophic.

Environmental groups are concerned about the endangerment of the maugean skate which is native to the region.

The community in Strahan remains adamant that the industry can continue farming without endangering the lifeline of the maugean skate.
