Teen accused of lighting two Perth bushfires that caused over $10k in damage

Police have charged a teenager after two bushfires damaged property and came dangerously close to residents in Perth‘s south-east.

Police will allege the 15-year-old set two fires in the bushland around a service centre near the Seville Grove and the Champions Lakes area yesterday.

Five hectares of bushland were burnt up and the roof of a fast food outlet, believed to be a chicken shop, was damaged to the value of approximately $10,000.

Police said that around 3:10pm, the boy allegedly set fire to dry leaf material in bushland on the corner of Lake Road and Catalonia Street in Seville Grove.

The resulting fire soon grew out of control.

Police will also allege that he then headed north to bushland within the area of Henderson Drive, Riverside Lane, Ranford and Lake Roads in Seville Grove where he again set fire to the bush.

Flames came within 100 metres of local properties leaving local residents in fear.

Staff at the Seville Grove McDonald’s restaurant confirmed the store was evacuated during the fire yesterday, with thick smoke filling the air.

Police said that approximately five hectares of bushland was destroyed.

The 15-year-old local has been charged with two counts of Wilfully Light or Cause to be Lit a Fire Likely to Injure or Damage.

He is due to appear before a children’s court in two week’s time.

The fire was soon brought under control, and downgraded to the advice level.
