The Australian cities that swear the most

We wanted to know which Aussie places use swear words the most, so we surveyed 1,503 residents of the 22 largest metropolitan areas to see which city is the cursing capital.

When it comes to strong language, Australia has a bit of a reputation. This is largely thanks to an infamous 2006 Australian tourism campaign which was initially banned from British TV and censored in North America because of the word “bloody”.

Australia’s then minister for Tourism was forced to defend the ad, arguing that the phrase “where the bloody hell are you?” is “plain speaking and friendly” within the context of Aussie vernacular.

To find out where in Australia you’re most likely to hear naughty words, Preply surveyed its most populated areas and asked residents to tell us about their swearing habits.

We also looked at the various types of settings where Aussies are likely to use expletives, while noting other demographic factors such as age and gender. In doing so, we also uncovered the Australian cities and settings where you’re least likely to hear people swear.

  • On average, Australians swear approximately 14 times per day
  • Australia’s most profane city is Bendigo, with an average of 21 swears per day
  • Hobart’s residents are the least likely to swear, averaging only 6 naughty words per day
  • Young Ausssies have the foulest mouths, with respondents in the 16-24 age bracket averaging 16 expletives per day
  • Australian men are more likely to swear (16 times per day) than women (13 times per day)
  • Driving is where Aussies do the most swearing, especially in Toowoomba, which is home to Australia’s most verbally vulgar motorists
