The National Park Warden confirmed that Diga Dantha, the most beautiful elephant in the Kalawewa National Park, was found dead after getting tangled in an illegal electric fence.
This tragic incident took place in Adiyagala Iguruwa area while the elephant was moving towards its usual habitat, Kahalla Pallekele Sanctuary.
This huge elephant, which is estimated to be between 45 and 50 years old, had been taken to the Kahalla Pallekele Sanctuary due to the overflowing of the Kala Lake Reservoir due to the recent weather conditions.
Diga Dantha is famous for having the longest tusk among Kalawewa elephants and is believed to be the last pair of tusks in the national park. The elephant contributed significantly to tourism, attracting foreign visitors eager to witness its beauty.
Meanwhile, its twin, Diga Dantha , was recently seen in the Kala Lake area, focusing on its tusks.
The police said that investigations are underway to arrest the person who installed the unauthorized electric cable
