Town in Portugal flooded by 2.2 million litres of wine

A small town in Portugal was hit by a massive flood of red wine after an accident at a nearby distillery.

Two tanks of red wine belonging to a distillery in Levira, Portugal burst, spilling their contents in the streets.

Residents watched on as 2.2 million litres of red wine were reportedly unleashed, flooding the town with a deluge of red wine.

Levira distillery was forced to apologise after a basement in a house near its distillery was flooded with wine.

The company took responsibility for the damage the spill may have caused.

Meanwhile, while local authorities told local media that volunteers prevented the wine from reaching the river and causing what could have been an environmental disaster.

The company also told local media they were “concerned about the company’s economic loss” after losing 2.2 million litres of red wine.

Investigations are ongoing into the cause of the spill.
