Toxic spill shuts down Melbourne road

Arsenic poured onto the streets of Melbourne’s Sunshine West causing a closure of Somerville Rd on Friday morning.

The toxic substance was in a container on a truck when it spilled onto Somerville Rd about 11.15am.

About 100L of arsenic escaped the container and threatens to contaminate the nearby stormwater system.

Victoria Police closed Somerville Rd in both directions and motorists were advised to avoid the area, Fire and Rescue Victoria (FRV) said.

FRV sent specialist teams and 30 firefighters to the hazardous material spill.

“FRV will remain on scene ensuring the product is safely removed from the roadway and prevented from entering the drains,” it said.

Ambulance Victoria paramedics also attended and assessed one patient who was not transported to hospital.

“Paramedics remain on scene for health monitoring,” Ambulance Victoria said.
