Two children have died following what police have described as a “particularly nasty” car crash at Monterey in Sydney’s south on Friday night, which police say was possibly caused by street racing.
Emergency services were called to The Grand Parade at 9:50pm following reports a car had hit a tree.
Two boys, aged nine and 10, later died after being taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital.
A nine-year-old girl was treated by paramedics at the scene and was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Detective Inspector Jason Hogan said it was a horrific crash scene, after a blue WRX car hit a large tree, killing the driver’s two nephews.
He said police did not know why the crash happened, but they were investigating possible street racing and were seeking a second car, a grey sedan that was travelling in lane one of the Grand Parade.
“It is a particularly nasty crash where two innocent young children have lost their lives,” he said.
“We’ll be in constant contact with all members of the family to ensure their welfare and that they’re kept abreast of the investigation as it unfolds.”
The driver of the car, a 33-year-old man, was taken to St George Hospital for mandatory testing — he is in a serious but stable condition under police guard and police would be “looking to interview and charge him”, Detective Inspector Hogan said.
The driver’s daughter, aged nine, survived the crash and police said she was in a stable condition and would be interviewed soon.
It was too early to say how fast the car was travelling at the time of the crash, police said.
Police have set up a crime scene, and officers from the Crash Investigation Unit will investigate.
