Two dead, a dozen injured in horror five-vehicle crash

The highway is closed in both directions.

Two people have died and about a dozen people are being treated for injuries after five vehicles were involved in a crash on the Great Western Highway, outside Lithgow, on Friday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene at Wallerawang, about two hours west of Sydney, at 12.50pm.

Police said two people had been confirmed dead in the crash, while about 12 people were being treated for “various injuries” by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

More than 15 emergency services vehicles are at the scene, according to a photo posted by the Rural Fire Service.

A crime scene has been established and is expected to remain in place “for a considerable time”, police said. Specialist police were on their way to the scene.

Multiple rescue choppers are at the site of the crash, with flight radars showing at least three rescue choppers have taken victims to Westmead Hospital.

The highway is closed in both directions, and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

West and east-bound traffic diversions are in place at Barton Avenue, Pipers Flat Road, and Range Road, entering onto the highway.
