Urgent beach warning for Sydneysiders over water contamination

As the weather heats up in Sydney, beachgoers are being warned a handful of beaches in the city may be affected by pollution.

Rainfall throughout the week has swept sewage and pollution straight into the harbour and a number of surf beaches.

Some 25 beaches within Sydney are all likely to be contaminated, according to the latest official BeachWatch forecast.

“A large number of swimming sites in the Sydney and Central Coast regions may be impacted by stormwater pollution today,” BeachWatch NSW said.

“Before your swim, check for signs of pollution such as flowing drains, open lagoons, odours, litter and debris.”

This bacteria could lead to illnesses such as gastroenteritis.

The contamination zone stretches from Bateau Bay on the Central Coast to Bundeena in Sydney’s south, with the worst-affected area between Narrabeen and Cronulla.
