US military personnel rescued from Melville Island aircraft crash

The ABC has confirmed multiple military personnel have been rescued from an aircraft crash site on the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin.

CareFlight has confirmed they have transferred three patients from the incident on the remote Melville Island, 60km off the coast from Darwin.

One patient is in a critical condition and the other two are both stable.

There are no reports of fatalities.

CareFlight and NT Police have confirmed they are both responding

The Northern Territory government’s fire incident map shows emergency services were notified about the aircraft crash at 9.43am this morning.

A Defence spokesperson said the “aircraft incident” occurred during Exercise Predators Run 2023.

“Initial reports suggest the incident involves United States defence personnel and that Australian Defence Force members were not involved,” they said.

“At this critical early stage, our focus is on the incident response and ensuring the safety of those involved.

“More information will be provided when appropriate.”
