Victoria hit by rain, floods as wild weather lashes state

Victoria has been battered by heavy rain and flooding, with residents in parts of the towns of Seymour and Yea in the state’s centre urged to evacuate.

Residents in PoowongLoch and Nyora, located in South Gippsland, are being advised not to drink tap water unless it is boiled first. 

It follows reports of contaminated water in the local water supply system.

Drinking unboiled tap water could lead to gastro-like symptoms.

You should also boil water before washing and preparing food, preparing drinks, making ice, preparing baby formula and brushing teeth.

A major flooding event is unfolding in Victoria, with the state’s central region hardest hit.

An evacuation warning is in place for parts of Seymour and parts of Yea in central Victoria. 

A major flood warning is in place for the Campaspe River in central Victoria.

Moderate flood warnings are in place for the King River and Fifteen Mile Creek in north east Victoria and the Goulburn River from Lake Eildon to Seymour in central Victoria.

A thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the north east. 

There are several advice levels warnings for possible flooding across most of the rest of the state including the Gippsland region and the Mallee. 

A second emergency warning has been issued for Yea in central Victoria.

Anyone located in Miller StreetLoan StreetWhatton PlaceCourt Street, Mulqueeny LaneClarence WayNewberry Chase and Buckland Court are being told to evacuate immediately.

relief centre will be open at the Yea Shire Hall in High Street at 2pm.

If you do not evacuate before 4pm your property may become isolated or inundated with water and it may be too late to leave.

A relief centre has been established at Seymour Sports & Aquatic Centre at Chittick Park.

Remember to take your pets, mobile phone and any medication you may need.

A reminder, the safest evacuation route is viz Anzac Avenue.

A severe thunderstorm warning from the Bureau of Meteorology is current for a section of Victoria stretching from Melbourne’s outer-north-east to Wodonga and across to the state’s far east.

The SES said there had been 920 calls for assistance in the 24 hours to 10am Monday morning. That number included more than 500 calls related to flooding and 118 counts of building damage.
