Victoria to triple land tax on some unused properties

In a bid to free up unused properties for renters, land tax on some homes in Victoria will triple as the state government strikes a deal with the Greens to pass the legislation.

There is currently a one per cent land tax on properties in inner and middle Melbourne that are left vacant for six months or more.

These proposed changes by the Allan government will see that expand to all of Victoria by 2025.

It will also see the one per cent tax double to two per cent if properties are left unused for two years and three per cent if they are unused for three years.

This is part of a controversial change to Victoria’s broader land tax laws which are now expected to pass parliament due to support of the Victorian Greens.
