Independent MP Zali Steggall says the plan to implement an upfront gas connection fee for Victorians is “necessary” for the transition to renewable energy.
“It is a natural next step when it comes to the policy to transition households off gas,” Ms Steggall said.
Households will be slugged with a one-off payment between $1700 and $2500 while businesses will face a fee between $7000 to $31,000.
“It does make sense to discourage new homes from connecting on to that gas network.”
Ms Steggall says the fees need to be implemented in a “measured way” so that households can afford to pay them.
