Victorian Premier to increase paid roles

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews is set to lift the number of paid positions on government boards as part of a new diversity push.

Current guidelines in place stipulate that boards should reflect the “rich diversity of the Victorian community”.

The government urges various departments to use the guide when appointing board members.

It supports recruiting Indigenous people, those with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with a disability, youth, and those in rural and regional areas.

But less than 20 per cent of the 31,289 board members are paid across the state, according to the Herald Sun.

In order to boost the representation on boards, the government will make a number of volunteer positions paid.

It is yet to determine exact figures, however.

A spokesperson for the Andrews government told the Herald Sun it is continuing to explore ways to promote diversity on public boards.

“We are making sure government boards reflect the diversity of the Victorian community and are continuing to explore ways to better promote diversity on public boards and ensure that community members who serve on boards are appropriately rewarded,” they said.
