Warmest spring on record in Western Australia, fifth-warmest nationwide

Spring 2023 was a whole lot warmer than usual in every state and territory of Australia, but one state’s average temperature was totally off the charts.

In terms of average temperatures across the country as a whole in spring 2023:

Maximum temperatures were 2.29 degrees above average.

Minimum temperatures were 1.09 degrees above average.

Overall temperatures were 1.69 degrees above average, which made it Australia’s fifth-warmest spring since national observations began in 1910.

While the nation as a whole had a very warm spring, and while each state and territory was at least half a degree warmer than its long-term average, nowhere came close to Western Australia’s temperature anomalies.

Averaged out across all its official weather stations, the state of WA was 2.28 degrees above average in spring 2023, which made it the state’s warmest spring on record.

This is reflected in the image above, which shows that only a tiny fragment of WA had average or slightly-below-average temperatures in spring 2023.

The BoM’s spring 2023 climate summary temperatures were higher than average compared to the winter 2023 summary, when Australia-wide temperatures were 1.53 degrees above the long-term average.

In the autumn 2023 summary temperatures were roughly equal to the long-term average, while the summer of 2022/23 was slightly above average.

The summer of 2023/24, which started on Friday, is projected by the BoM to be warmer than usual across Australia as a whole, as the map with the red shading illustrates.
