Flood-stricken residents in south-east Queensland are being warned to prepare for more storms and heavy rain today.
There is also a current flood watch for the south-east coast and Capricornia.
The warnings of more wild weather come after yesterday’s severe thunderstorms and floods lashed the south-east.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese travelled to Cairns today where he announced $24 million in funding for tourism operators in Far North Queensland.
“It’s about jobs, it’s about this community, it’s ensuring the workforce can stay here linked in with the businesses who have been dramatically affected by this flood event,” Albanese said.
The package is in addition to the $64 million pledged for the state’s storm and tropical cyclone recovery and will be jointly funded by the Queensland government and the Commonwealth.
“This is an example of state governments and the Commonwealth working together to ensure nobody is left behind,” he said.
Premier Steven Miles said the true scale of the devastation from those storms was only now becoming clear.
Meanwhile, floodwater warnings across Victoria are today moving from emergency to watch and act, including in the towns of Rochester, Seymour and Yea.
Authorities have issued a moderate flood warning for the Latrobe River, from Yallourn to Traralgon Creek.
The river is expected today to rise above the moderate flood level of five metres.
