Work under way to create new mega train station in Melbourne

Work has begun to transform Sunshine Station in Melbourne’s west into the “Southern Cross of the west,” which will create a link between the city’s airport rail and the suburban network.

Additional platforms along with signalling improvements will be just some of the upgrades to the station, under the $63.5 million investment.

It comes as three train stations in Brunswick will close and be replaced with two new stations under level-crossing removal works in the city’s inner north.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Danny Pearson said the Sunshine station upgrade would increase capacity for additional services from Wyndham Vale and allow for future electrified trains to run from Melton.

It will also enable six trains per hour to the airport.

“Rebuilding Sunshine Station will help to unlock capacity for future upgrades for Melbourne’s growing west,” he said.

Meanwhile, it’s a different story in Melbourne’s north, which is facing the loss of a train station, sparking heavy criticism from the community.
