Chery Australia recalls Omoda 5 over deadly defect

Chery Australia has recalled 5901 of its Omoda 5 model, after discovering a defect which can result in brake failure for the small SUV.

The recall impacts all Chery Omoda 5s sold in Australia since local deliveries began in mid-2023.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the bolt securing the brake pipe union may not have been tightened sufficiently. This could cause the brake fluid to leak and result in reduced braking performance,” Chery said in its recall notice.

“A reduction in braking performance could increase the risk of an accident resulting in serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants, pedestrians and other road users.”

Chery has advised Omoda 5 owners to contact their nearest Chery dealership to request an inspection of the brake pipe union bolt and have the rectification if required completed, free of charge.

Chery Australia’s Customer Car Team can be contacted by calling 1800 424 379.
