Beaverbrook, a country-house hotel near Leatherhead, is as decadent as befits the former home of charismatic Max Beaverbrook, the media baron, wartime cabinet minister and party-loving friend of Elizabeth Taylor, Winston Churchill and Rudyard Kipling. This year, it adds another 21 rooms and a five-bedroom party pad to the mix, just a short buggy ride from the main complex in the sleepy Surrey Hills hamlet of Mickleham.

Beaverbrook’s creative director, Frank Lowe, and designer Nicola Harding, who oversaw the much-envied look for its Garden House, are in charge of fairy-dusting the new rooms. Mickleham guests will have their own swimming pool, mini spa and restaurant as well as the run of Beaverbrook’s impressive facilities.

Built for 1920s American actress and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, this charming place was designed by architect Clough Williams-Ellis, known for creating Portmeirion. It’s a bit like a sister to the Gallivant and sits by the sea, perfect for a unique getaway. Just like the popular Gallivant in nearby Camber Sands, the New Romney spot has a great outdoor wellness feel. There’s a yoga studio, sauna, and a treatment room.

Outside, there’s a coastal garden with a beach gazebo, a place to eat, and various spots to relax, all with fantastic views of Romney Bay. The decoration in the twelve bedrooms gives a nod to Hopper’s history, and the building’s Edwardian origins are reflected too, including a gong that signals cocktail hour.

Margot Henderson, who is like the queen of the cool food scene in London, and is married to Fergus, a famous guy for cooking all parts of animals, is turning into a relaxed country person. She’s fixing up a really old 17th-century pub in Batcombe, a quiet village super close to Bruton, which is famous for its tasty scones.

The inside of the pub is all cozy and classic, with wooden beams, stone floors, and a big fireplace. And when you’re inside, you’ll feel all warm and comfy because of the yummy food Margot Henderson makes. She’s got things like chicken and tarragon pies, custard tarts, and local cheeses with cob nuts. You can have these with beers or pick from a short list of wines.

They’ve also got five bedrooms in the pub, and they’ll be filled with old cool stuff, artwork, and you can even see the village rooftops from there. So, you can eat, sleep, and do it all over again while having a hearty breakfast from Somerset.
